What First-Time Algarve Travelers Should Know About Booking a Photographer

Updated: Jun 29

You’ve booked the flights, packed the sunscreen, and planned the beach days… but what about the photos? Now, you might be wondering:

"Should I book a photographer? Is it worth it?"

Fair question—especially if it’s your first time here. And the answer is, “Absolutely Yes”—but only if you know these five things first.

Let’s walk through these five things first-time Algarve travelers should know before booking a photographer so that you can make the most of your memories.

Research and Choose the Right Photographer:

Not all photographers work equally, and the Algarve has many styles to choose from: romantic, candid, editorial, family-focused, documentary-style, and more.

Before booking, take time to scroll through their portfolios, read reviews, and look at how they edit photos.

Review their portfolios: Browse their photo galleries. Also, look for variety in location, poses, and family dynamics. Do their images evoke emotion? Do they feel natural or overly staged? Your photos should feel like you, not someone else.

Check editing style: It can completely change how they feel. Editing adds mood, tone, color, and personality to every shot. That’s why it’s so important to find a photographer whose editing style matches your vision.

Read Reviews: Hear from people who’ve already been in your shoes. Go check their Google Reviews, Testimonials on their website, and Client comments on social media. Check here on my business profile Massimo Pardini Photography Algarve what my clients are saying about me.

Understand the Contract and Costs:

Hiring a professional photographer is an investment in memories. And a trustworthy photographer will be transparent from the beginning. He’ll list all the prices upfront.

Photographer prices in the Algarve vary based on experience, package details, and the type of photography. Expect to pay anywhere from €150 for a short session to several thousand euros for full-day wedding coverage with multiple photographers and extras.

Some photographers offer hourly rates depending on experience. Many photographers offer packages that include a set number of edited photos, hours of coverage, and sometimes additional services like albums or video teasers.

Location and Timing:

You may already have a beach in mind—Ponta da Piedade, Benagil Cave, Praia do Camilo, perhaps? These iconic spots are stunning, but some spots are more popular, require a bit of a walk, or receive stronger sunlight depending on the time of day. A good Algarve photographer will help you pick the perfect spot based on the season, lighting, and your vision—whether that’s a hidden cove, cliffside views, or sunset dunes.

The best time to shoot in Algarve is golden hour (shortly after sunrise or before sunset) when the light is soft, golden, and ultra-flattering. Midday light can be quite bold—great for high-contrast editorial styles, but for softer, more flattering tones, golden hour is ideal. Avoid midday unless you're going for high-contrast editorial looks.

From the moment you contact me, we’ll discuss your vision for the session. Whether you want to focus on capturing your children’s joy, an intimate couple's moment, or your family’s connection, I’ll suggest the best locations to ensure the session reflects your unique story.

Confirm: What You’ll Get

Every photographer works differently. Before you finalize anything, ask these 10 helpful questions:

  • How long will the session last?

  • How many photos will I receive?

  • Will they be edited or raw files?

  • What’s the delivery timeline?

  • What’s the delivery method? (Downloadable digital files, a private online gallery, or printed photos?)

  • Are sneak peeks included?

  • Can I request a few specific shots or poses?

  • What’s the backup plan in case of bad weather?

  • Are there any additional travel costs for certain locations?

  • Is there an additional fee for photo retouching?

A professional Algarve photographer will typically send a contract outlining what's included—number of images, hours of shooting, payment terms, cancellation policy, etc. This helps set clear expectations on both sides and ensures you walk away with exactly what you’re expecting (or even more!).

Book Early:

Algarve is a hot destination—literally and figuratively—and professional photographers get booked up fast, especially during peak travel season from May to September nowadays also October.

What many first-timers don’t know is that sunrise and sunset slots are extremely limited—and those are the times when Algarve’s beaches look their most magical. Booking early helps you secure those dreamy golden hour slots and gives you the best chance to work with a photographer whose style truly matches your vision without the stress of last-minute availability.

So, as soon as your travel dates are locked in, start researching and contacting photographers. Ideally, you should book 3–6 weeks in advance (even earlier in summer). That gives you enough time to coordinate outfits, scout ideas, and ask questions without rushing.

So, I hope this will help you make a confident decision about the right photographer who will not only take stunning photos but also guide you through the experience—from picking the perfect beach to capturing the real moments that matter most.
