What to Wear for a Family Beach Photoshoot in Algarve

Updated: Aug 5

Professional Family Photography Algarve

Picked your beach and booked your family shoot and now you're wondering:

“What should we wear for our Algarve beach shoot?”

I get you. It can also be the most confusing part because your family photoshoot in the Algarve is a big event. Naturally, you want to look and feel amazing against the golden sands, dramatic cliffs, and stunning blue waters.

And when you're working with sunlight, sand, wind, and water, your outfits need to work with the environment, not against it. I’ve photographed so many families in the Algarve, and I’ve seen what works and what doesn’t in real beach light, wind, and waves.

So in this guide, I’ll walk you through everything I usually help my clients with figuring out best outfits.

In this blog, you'll explore:

✔️ How to choose the right color palette  ✔️ Should the entire family wear matchy dresses?  ✔️ Best looks for every family member  ✔️ What to avoid wearing in Algarve  ✔️ Recommended family photographer

How to Choose the Right Color Palette for Family Beach Photoshoot

When you’re surrounded by The Algarve’s natural scenery, it calls for soft, complementary colors that enhance the surroundings without clashing.

These are the palettes I usually suggest:

a) Neutral & Earthy Tones

Beige, cream, white, soft gray, and light brown blend beautifully with the sand and cliffs. You can wear these tones for a timeless and elegant look.

b) Soft Pastels

Light blues, blush pinks, mint greens, and lavender add a gentle pop of color. These are perfect for a dreamy, romantic vibe.

c) Coastal Blues & Whites

Navy, sky blue, and crisp white mimic the ocean and sky for a classic and clean appearance.

Algarve Photoshoot Color Palette Tips

Trust me, choosing the Right Fabric is also crucial for the Season You're Traveling to Algarve.

In summer (May to September):

I always recommend linen and cotton. They’re breathable, lightweight, and comfortable, perfect for warm beach weather.

In cooler months (October to April):  I suggest layering soft knits, lightweight cotton sweaters, and shawls or wraps. Choose deeper versions of neutrals like mocha, dusty blue, or soft olive to suit the soft winter light.

Best Looks for Each Family Member

Every family member should feel comfortable, confident, and natural, especially kids. Here are my best suggestions to create the best family looks for every member.

For Women: The Coastal Chic Look

I always suggest breezy and flowy maxi dresses, soft fabrics like linen or chiffon, and light textures like lace create a relaxed, elegant vibe that flows beautifully in the beach breeze. These are perfect for golden hour photos on Algarve’s stunning beaches. Accessories: Straw hat, flower crown, layered necklaces, or a light scarf.

For Men: The Gentleman Look

Linen button-downs, neutral trousers or shorts, and rolled sleeves that look effortless and classic, perfect for barefoot moments by the sea. Accessories: A neutral-toned watch, simple leather bracelet, or a braided bracelet.

For Girls: The Little Bloom Look

I bet your daughter will look sweet and playful in flowy sundresses, soft pastels, ruffles, and light textures. Accessories: Floral hairpins, a bow headband, dainty sandals, or a small straw purse.

For Boys: The Mini Tourist Look

Henley tops or collared shirts with rolled-up shorts or chinos this look is comfy, photo-friendly, and made for climbing rocks or chasing waves.

For Babies: The Snuggle by the Sea Look

Babies should be comfortable so everyone enjoys the session. Choose soft one-piece rompers, cozy layers, and neutral colors.

Should the Entire Family Wear Matching Outfits?

This is one of the questions I get every single time from families.  “Should we all wear the same thing?”

The short answer? No.

Here’s why Matching Outfits Don’t Work:

→ Each person’s style gets lost→ It can look staged or outdated→ Too much of one color (especially black or white) may clash with the natural tones of Algarve’s beaches

What I recommend is coordinating, not matching.

Choose a shared color palette, mix in subtle patterns like soft stripes or florals, and use varied textures like linen or cotton to create a natural, unified look without losing individuality.

Algarve Photoshoot Color Combination

If you want a little “matchy-matchy” vibes, Try the same color family in different shades (e.g., navy + slate + powder blue), or dress siblings in matching dresses with the same accessories—they’ll look adorable without overdoing it.

What to Avoid Wearing

Some items just don’t photograph well at the beach. I suggest avoiding these for best results:

Neon or fluorescent colors:  they reflect on skin and throw off tones

Large logos, cartoon prints, or busy patterns: too distracting

Denim jeans: stiff, heavy, and hot

All black or all white: opt for off-white or mixed tones instead

Overly formal clothing: feels out of place by the sea

Heels or boots: barefoot or sandals look more natural

My Advice: Keep It Real & Relaxed

The best photos are rarely the posed ones, they’re the real moments.  A shared laugh. A windy hug. A toddler splashing in the waves.

So… I always tell families: choose comfort, lightness, and colors that feel like the beach. The rest? That’s where I come in. I’ll guide you through every step and capture your real family as you are, together.
