So you’re here in the Algarve (or planning to be), and you're thinking… “Where’s the perfect place to do a family shoot?”
Trust me, you're not alone. I hear this all the time.
With over 100 beaches and tons of cute towns, I get why you’re overwhelmed. Cliffs? Calm water? Village vibes? It’s a lot.
But don’t worry. I’ve got you.
Here are 7 spots I personally recommend to families I shoot with all the time. Not the overhyped ones, just the ones where the light is dreamy, the space is right, and the photos turn out chef’s kiss.
Praia do Martinhal
I love shooting here, especially with families that have young kids. This beach, located near Sagres, is quiet, wide, and has super-soft sand, making it perfect for letting the little ones roam free while I capture those candid, joy-filled moments.
One time, I did a shoot here with a family and their two kids. We got there early to let the kids explore, and they ran around the dunes giggling and playing. The light was amazing, the beach was empty, and the photos came out so natural.

The views from the top of the dunes are incredible too. We usually start there for some wide scenic shots.
Tip: Bring some water and snacks as it keeps the kids happy and energized.
Why I recommend it:
- Very quiet and peaceful, great for younger kids or shy little ones
- Calm waves make it safe for playful sessions by the water
- Wide open space with soft sand and gentle hills in the back
2. Praia Dona Ana, one of the best family photoshoot locations in Algarve

Praia Dona Ana is like a painting. The water here is a glowing turquoise, and the sand has this soft, peachy tone that looks beautiful in photos and is one of the best family photoshoot locations in Algarve. I love shooting here between 8–9 AM when the beach is quiet and the sun is gentle.
It’s a family favorite for its calm waves and enclosed bay. The staircase down is not too long, and the beach has enough space for kids to play while you focus on capturing joy-filled moments.
Quick Checklist:
Get there by 8–9 AM for soft light and fewer people.
neutral-toned outfits that blend with the soft tones.
Bring something soft to sit on like mat
3.Praia dos Estudantes

A small beach right in Lagos, just a few minutes’ walk from the old town. It’s not big or crowded and that’s exactly why I love it for family photos.
Praia dos Estudantes has something really special, it's a stone bridge built between two cliffs, and it looks amazing in pictures. The bridge was once part of an old fortress. Now, it adds a unique touch to your photos that you won’t find at other beaches.
The beach is split into two little sections. There’s a short tunnel you walk through to get from one side to the other. It's fun for kids and feels like a mini adventure.
Because the cliffs are tall and wrap around the beach, it stays quiet and protected from the wind. That means it’s easier to keep your hair in place and your kids warm and happy.
I recommend this beach because it’s really close to the city, which means you won’t have to spend a lot of time driving or planning. You can just show up, relax, and enjoy your session.
4. Praia da Cordoama
If you’re looking for something a bit wild and off the beaten path, this is the one I suggest. Praia da Cordoama is one of favorites by locals for its raw, untamed beauty.
It’s located on the west coast near Vila do Bispo, and it feels like another world. Massive cliffs, open skies, and waves. It's the kind of spot that brings out real, emotional photos.
It’s rarely crowded, so you get total freedom and space to just be yourselves without people in the background.
I did a sunset shoot here with a family who wanted a more natural, moody vibe. We started at the clifftop viewpoint. The colors in the sky were insane, and the whole session felt effortless.

5. Praia da Luz
If you’re staying around Lagos and want a spot that’s picture-perfect, Praia da Luz is a great pick. It’s got a nice mix of beachy vibes, calm atmosphere, and the dramatic Rocha Negra cliffs in the background give your photos a cool, unique edge.
Locals love it because it’s super family-friendly. It has soft sand for the kids to run around and quiet corners for those sweet, close-up moments.
There’s also a cute walkway by the sea with palm trees and little cafés. I love doing both beach and promenade shots here. The palm trees and cafés give it a cute lifestyle touch.
Oh, and don’t worry, it’s stroller-friendly and parking’s easy.

Best time to shoot: Either in the morning or around sunset. Mornings (between 8–10 AM) are peaceful with soft golden light, and at sunset, the cliffs glow in these warm, rich tones that make your photos look amazing.
What to wear: I recommend wearing Outfits that flow with movement and something light for golden hour.
6. Porto de Mós
If you want a wide place with fewer people and more breathing room, this is the solid pick. I recommend this spot a lot for big families or shoots with grandparents.
The light here is SO good. The cliffs catch the sunlight just right during golden hour, and the whole beach glows that gives perfect light for your photos.
Oh, and just before you head down to the beach, there’s a cliff-top viewpoint that’s perfect for wide-angle, scenic family shots with the ocean behind you.
Note: Be easy, it’s super easy to access good parking nearby. Also, it’s stroller-friendly with kids.

7. Praia do Tonel
If you want something bold and fun, this beach in Sagres is a great choice. The cliffs are high, the waves are strong, and the whole beach feels full of energy.
I love coming here with families who don’t mind getting a little sandy or climbing a rock or two. Families who love adventure usually enjoy this spot. The energy here is amazing, it’s relaxed, raw, and real.

I’ve captured families here with flying kites, jumping in waves, and just having a good time. The sunset light is beautiful, and there’s always something interesting happening in the background.
Quick Checklist:
Arrive an hour before sunset for golden light
Great for energetic kids who love exploring
Wear sturdy shoes for walking on rocks
