You're not alone. A lot of my clients come to Portugal to reflect, reset, or celebrate something personal. And they want photos that feel like them, confident, calm, present.
I shoot solo travelers all the time here in the Algarve, and I always get asked the same thing: “Where should we shoot?”
So I’ve put together this guide with my top solo portrait spots, locations I recommend to my clients not just because they’re pretty, but because they feel right. The energy, the light, the space they all work together to tell your story.
1. Praia Dona Ana in Lagos - Best for Portrait Photography in Algarve
If you’re staying in Lagos, this is one of my favorite places to start. Praia Dona Ana is framed by tall golden cliffs, calm turquoise water, and warm-toned sand that glows beautifully in photos. The colors here are just so good, earthy and vibrant without being too loud.
On the far right side of the beach, there’s a little spot where the cliffs gently curve inward. It’s quiet, sheltered, and full of texture. This is where I love to shoot portraits that feel thoughtful and personal. You can sit barefoot on the sand, knees tucked in, looking out at the sea, soft waves behind you, the cliffs standing tall around you.
I recommend coming early in the morning around 8 to 10 AM. The light is soft and dreamy, the beach is still peaceful, and the wet sand sometimes reflects the sky like a mirror. It adds a quiet glow to every frame.
This spot is perfect if you're traveling to reflect, recharge, or just enjoy some stillness. The energy here is calm, grounded, and quietly beautiful, just like the portraits we’ll create. This in one off the best places for Portrait Photography in Algarve.

2. Ponta da Piedade – Lagos
Just outside Lagos, this is one of my favorite places to bring solo travelers who want something bold, cinematic, and a little bit wild. The cliffs at Ponta da Piedade are dramatic and full of character, with winding paths, natural arches, and views that stretch endlessly over the ocean.
I love starting at the lighthouse lookout, it's perfect for wide shots where you’re surrounded by nothing but sky and sea. There's something powerful about placing yourself in that kind of space, where your presence feels grounded and small in the best way. Then we wander the cliffside paths, capturing quieter portraits in motion, hair in the wind, pausing mid-step, or simply standing still at the edge.
📸I recommend shooting here around golden hour. The light turns warm, the cliffs start to glow, and everything feels just a little softer.
This is the spot I come to when a client wants their photos to feel like a pause, a moment of reflection, freedom, or strength. It’s honest, open, and breathtaking.
I don't recommend this spot on high season summer months cause is too crowded but rest of the year is stunning.
3. Praia da Salema – Vila do Bispo
I always recommend Praia da Salema to my solo clients who want something raw and authentic. Fewer people, fewer distractions, and that makes it so much easier to just relax into yourself and be fully present.
I love starting near the fishing boats. They're colorful, rustic, and give the portraits a real sense of place. I’ll often guide you to sit or lean beside them, barefoot in the sand, letting the textures and charm of the scene create something soft and story-driven.
When clients are up for it, I suggest we head up to the cliffside paths for a wider perspective. From above, you can see the coastline stretch out, and I can frame those quiet, reflective moments, your steps in the sand, your gaze toward the sea, with a sense of peaceful space around you.
I especially love photographing slow walks along the shore here. I’ll capture your footprints behind you, the movement in your body, the way the light hits your skin. It’s simple, but it holds so much emotion.
4. Praia do Tonel – Sagres
When I think of untamed beauty, I think of Praia do Tonel. If you’re in Sagres and want portraits that feel bold, free, and alive, this is where I bring you. The cliffs here are steep and dramatic, the waves crash with energy, and the whole place feels like the edge of the world in the best way.
I love shooting here with solo travelers who want to capture a deep connection to wild nature. There’s something about the way the ocean meets the cliffs; it instantly shifts your energy. It’s unapologetically real.
I usually start near the rocky ledges on the right side of the beach. I use them to frame strong, impactful portraits. If we climb a little higher, the dunes above the beach give us a different angle, open, and full of movement. I’ll guide you through soft, flowing poses that let the wind do its thing, creating natural energy in every shot.
📸 I recommend shooting either early in the morning or late afternoon. Depending on the weather and the sky, we’ll get either golden light or dramatic clouds, both are stunning here. And when the tide is low, the reflections near the shoreline create these glassy, mirror-like shots that are just wow.
5. Cabo de São Vicente – Sagres
This isn’t a beach, it’s one of the most iconic cliffside points in all of Portugal. I bring clients here when they want something that feels bigger than just a beautiful background. Cabo de São Vicente has this surreal, almost sacred energy. With its historic lighthouse and cliffs that drop 75 meters straight into the sea, it’s a place that holds space for stillness, clarity, and reflection.
I love shooting near the viewpoint ledges; there’s nothing but sky and sea behind you, and it makes for wide, cinematic portraits that feel minimal but deeply emotional. The pathway that leads to the lighthouse is perfect for symmetrical, storytelling shots. It almost feels like a personal journey captured in one frame.
📸 One of my favorite ways to shoot here is with a long lens, capturing your silhouette from a distance. You might be standing still, facing the sea, with the wind brushing past you.
Golden hour here is beautiful. The cliffs warm up, the light turns soft, and the whole scene feels like it belongs in a film. And if we get an overcast day? Even better. The mood shifts into something quiet, powerful, and full of story.
